Four decades after the Chernobyl disaster, new fears are emerging around the safety of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Environmental group Greenpeace has issued a stark warning: damage caused by a drone strike to the New Safe Confinement structure could lead to a “catastrophic” collapse risk.
The containment system, built to seal the remains of Reactor 4, is now under strain due to war conditions, delayed repairs, and structural vulnerabilities. Experts warn that a failure could release highly radioactive dust and nuclear material, posing a threat not just to Ukraine but across Europe.
Senior Greenpeace nuclear specialist Shaun Burnie highlights the growing danger, while Chernobyl technical expert Oleksandr Skomarokhov explains what still lies beneath the destroyed reactor.
As the world marks 40 years since the disaster, Chernobyl is once again at the center of global nuclear safety concerns.
